PART 11
I wrote this part really quickly. I had to be awake till 1 in the morning to do it, so sorry for mistakes and misspelling. All of you wanted Agnes to meet Paddy (95%), only one vote was for 'No' - it's my vote :) So here is your story. If an option of the vote booth overweighs the second one I may close the voting earlier or start to write earlier., which help a lot. Only when you guys are undecided or when I'm lazy (that happen very often) I start writing at the end of weekends.
Paddy glanced at his watch for the hundredth time that hour. Scott had to work so Agnes should have been back by now. Unless she had ignored his message and stubbornly returned to her room.
He cursed the guys again for being so careless. He didn't want to think about how callous it must have sounded to Agnes when she overheard them talking. She wasn't supposed to find out about the bet. Especially not that way. He ran a nervous hand through his hair and checked his watch again. It was after 11.
Just when he was about to give up and walk away, he heard a sound of heels on the pavement approaching. His breath caught in his throat when he saw Agnes turn the corner. She was still dressed up from dinner, wearing a light blue sundress which matched the color of her eyes. She looked like an angel.
"God, you are beautiful" Paddy murmured more to himself than Agnes, unable to take his eyes off her.
"Another one of your seductive lines?" Agnes spat back in disgust. "You can stop the act, Paddy. You won. Game's over. So how much you got for me? "
"Agnes, I…"
"How much!?"
Paddy bowed his head shamefully.
"500 bucks" he said quietly, unable to look her in the eyes.
"Wow. No wonder you were so damn persistent. It all makes sense now… That's a le lot of money… I was totally manipulated and used for your little games…" She was on the verge of crying, so she stopped herself and turned away, not wanting him to see her cry.
"It was a terrible thing we did, Agnes. But once again, I let my ego get the better of me."
"Gee, isn't that a surprise."
"Just hear me out please?"
She turned on her heels and he could see the hurt in her eyes.
"I don't want to hear anything else from you, Paddy! This whole week has been nothing but lies!"
"It might have started out that way, yes. You were a challenge. You annoyed the hell out of me with your sarcastic stone cold personality. The guys said you were impossible. I wanted so badly to prove them wrong, but I also wanted to be victorious over you too, just as revenge. But as the days went by, things began to change. My attitude, my outlook, my emotions. Suddenly I wasn't playing for money anymore. The only prize I wanted was you."
"That's so sentimental" she scoffed angrily. "Like a line out of a movie or something. You're a natural born actor, you know that?"
"Damn it Agnes! I made a mistake! I'm human!"
"No, you're not! You're an insensitive jerk who cares only about himself and his pretty boy image!"
"That was the old Paddy. I've changed this week. And you noticed that change. Otherwise last night would have never happened."
"Nothing happened last night."
"Everything happened, Agnes."
"Last night was nothing more than you trying to seduce a girl who already has a boyfriend just so you wouldn't lose 500 bucks."
"Do you really believe that?"
"I do now."
"Last night something special happened between us, Agnes. For the first time in my life, I was with a girl and I wasn't thinking of all the other girls I was missing out on. I opened my heart and let myself fall vulnerable. And for the first time I saw your guard come down and watched as you surrendered your pride in exchange for your heart. I even saw you smile at me as we danced. Last night was a milestone, Agnes. For both of us."
"We were drunk, that's all." Agnes mumbled, trying so hard not to be a prey to his lines again.
Paddy laughed lightly.
"You're back to that again? Why are you still fighting this?"
He held out his hand, but she spitefully stepped away from him.
"You can stop the act now. You won the money. Just give it up and leave me alone. Or is it another 500 bucks if you get me in bed?"
That accusation wounded Paddy more than any of her other angry words. "What kind of monster do you think I am?" he asked quietly.
"A self centered, self righteous, arrogant celebrity. I didn't expect anything less from you."
"I'm not taking the money, Agnes."
"Should I applaud your chivalry?" She turned and started to walk away. "I've heard enough. I have to go pack. Thanks for a memorable, heartbreaking week."
"Wait. Listen to me, please."
Agnes stopped and reluctantly turned around to face him, wiping a single tear from her eyes.
"It was ironic how you assumed I didn't know what love was and you were right. I actually had no clue until this week. Until this wonderfully amazing week spent in paradise with you. You tried to alienate me with your hostility, but all our sparring just brought us closer. I love the way you challenge me, the way you knock me back down when my head gets too big, the way you're not afraid to insult me, the way you refuse to kiss up to me just because of who I am. I love the way you always have to be right. I love your stubbornness. I love the way you glare at me and cross your arms over your chest when giving me your famous look of death. I love the way your eyes sparkle with the hint of a smile which you so desperately try and hide because you don't like giving me the satisfaction of knowing I made you laugh. I love the way you bite your lower lip when you're nervous and can't think of a quick enough comeback. I love the feel of your hand in mine, the strength I get from holding you in my arms, the sweet taste of your lips when we kissed. But most of all, I love the fact that you taught me what real love is. And because of all of these reasons… I love you, Agnes."
Agnes's head was spinning from the implications behind his intense words.
"Please don't, Paddy."
"I swore I'd never see the day, but it's come." he continued excitedly, ignoring her protests. "Paddy Kelly is in love and ready to commit to a relationship."
Alright so, maybe he had changed after all. The boy he was at the beginning of the week, the boy who had made a reckless bet was certainly not the man she had kissed last night. But still, what could she do? They didn't stand a chance together. It was way too irrational.
"Well, you're going to have to find another to commit to, because I'm already committed to someone else." Agnes tried so hard not to cry as she said it.
"But you don't love him."
"That's not your business."
"I know. But I can't help it. Why don't you leave him?" Paddy asked, exasperated.
"Because I do love Scott" she lied, trying to convince herself as well as Paddy. "He means the world to me and we're gonna get married in a few years".
"Scott will never marry you. He's married to his job."
"And you're not? You're such a hypocrite! The group is what you live for! Everything and everyone else are just second in line. Even Jimmy admitted it at dinner that night."
"That's not true. Jimmy is too practical for his own good."
"Well, in today's world practical is the only way to be. Sad but true."
"You don't believe in following your heart?" Paddy asked softly.
"Of course I do. Why else would I be with Scott?"
"Because you're scared."
"Scared of what?"
"Scared of change. Scared of admitting you've fallen for a celebrity. Scared of confronting both him and yourself. Scared of the challenge and sacrifice that would come along with a long distance relationship with a pop-star. You're scared of the real world and what's out there beyond Scott. But most of all, you're scared to admit you love me just as much as I love you."
His eyes were an abyss of emotion and Agnes felt her whole body grow weak as she lost herself in his gaze. Her heart was pounding ferociously within her chest. She tried to speak, to defend herself, to deny his accusations but no words came out of her mouth. Because everything he had said was the truth.
They stood there silently looking into each other's eyes and when Agnes didn't respond, Paddy moved to kiss her.
"Stop" she whispered just as his lips were about to brush hers.
"Do you really want me to?" he challenged boldly as he brushed soft kisses across her forehead, her temple and her cheeks.
He was about to reach her lips again when Agnes pulled away.
"Yes, I really do." She gave him a soft kiss on his cheek and said "You're gonna make some lucky girl very happy one day." It took all of her strength to speak those words without crying.
She started to walk away again, when he grabbed her hand.
"I want to make you happy, Agnes. Nobody else."
"I have to go. It's getting late." Agnes turned away from him.
"You're leaving? Just like this?"
"I have to pack."
"No, I mean is this your goodbye? What about us?"
"There is no 'us'. There never was."
Her words were blunt, yet spoken gently. She took one last long look into those mesmerizing blue eyes.
"Goodbye Paddy. And thanks for a unforgettable week."
After managing a faint smile, she released his hand and hurried past him back inside. Paddy didn't try to stop her this time, because he knew his efforts would only be in vain. There had to be some way to reach her.
The only problem was that he had only 10 hours left to figure it out.
Scott returned from his last shift at 2am and even though Agnes was wide awake, she turned on her side and pretended to be sleeping when she heard his key in the door. Ever since walking away from Paddy and his offer of love, she had paced around the suite restlessly, plagued by both guilt and regret. Guilt for never loving Scott the way she should have and regret for dismissing Paddy like he was nothing more than a one week fling. She felt much more for him yet she could never express those feelings. She had come close a number of times, including tonight, but had always fought them back. She had to be realistic. She could have no future with Paddy.
Scott settled into his side of the bed without even leaning over and giving Agnes a soft kiss goodnight like he used to. And in a matter of seconds, he was already snoring, fast asleep.
Agnes shifted slightly, returning to her original position on her back and stared up at the ceiling for the longest time, thinking of Paddy. What was he doing at that very moment? Sleeping? Pacing? Or shacking up with his latest conquest as a sick kind of consolation prize?
She closed her eye and imagined he was there in bed, lying next to her. His strong arms would pull her close and he would kiss her hungrily, needing her as much as she needed him.
Agnes's heart ached at the mental image she had created and stubbornly forced it out of her head. She defiantly got out of bed and went into the kitchen for a glass of water. Scott's snoring could be heard coming from the bedroom and it seemed to be growing louder by the moment. Groaning inwardly, she took her glass and retreated onto the balcony.
The night was still balmy but the cool breeze felt heavenly against her flushed face. Paddy had been out on his balcony as well, unable to sleep and unable to come up with a plan as the precious hours ticked away. His heart skipped a beat when he heard Agnes's balcony door open and saw her step outside. He remained still at first, not sure if he wanted to be noticed. He watched as she walked over to the railing, balance her glass on the edge and run both hands through her hair, letting out a quiet sigh as she stared out across the night sky.
The temptation was too great. He started to speak before he could stop himself.
"Can't sleep?"
The familiar voice startled Agnes and she squinted across the way to see Paddy sitting alone in the darkness.
"Scott snores" she said quietly, ignoring the warning voice in her head telling her to go back inside before it was too late.
"Another strike against him" Paddy cracked lightly.
"So what's you excuse?" Agnes chuckled softly.
"I've got a lot on my mind."
"Like you should shave your beard and mustache or not for your shows after returning home?"
Paddy looked at her, slightly offended by her sarcasm and started to protest.
"I'm just kidding" Agnes said warmly.
"I knew that" he replied foolishly.
"Sure you did."
They exchanged a warm smile.
"So what's your real excuse?" Agnes persisted.
"I was enjoying the view." Paddy shrugged casually.
Agnes looked out across the city.
"It's nice."
"Not this view, the view of the ocean under the moonlight."
Agnes gave him a confused look and he pointed around the corner of his balcony.
"Oh. I thought maybe you were hallucinating or something" she teased.
"Ha ha. Very funny." He hesitated a moment and then blurted out "Why don't you come over? I don't think anyone should leave Hawaii without experiencing this."
"You sound like our volcano tour guide." Agnes laughed.
"Nope. Just a guy who loves the ocean almost as much as life itself. Come on. Come see."
"I'm waiting for you to say it's a totally orgasmic experience, too."
"Well… actually… now that you mentioned it…" He flashed her a suggestive smile and she shook her head in mock disapproval. "Come on" he eagerly invited her again. "Come and see it."
The invitation was way too tempting for Agnes.
"I'll have to take a rain check. I don't want to wake the guys."
"Rain check? You're leaving tomorrow."
"Can't put anything past you, can I?"
"Nice try, though. Come on. I'll meet you by the door."
"Paddy" she protested, but he had already disappeared inside.
Telling herself she was making the biggest mistake of her life, she grabbed her keys and snuck out without waking Scott. Paddy was waiting by the door and she followed him quietly across the suite out to their balcony.
"Oh wow" she whispered breathlessly when she saw the view that had entranced him so.
"Isn't it amazing?"
"Like something out of a painting… god, it's beautiful. And the water is so peaceful tonight." If she listened closely, she could hear the distant sound of the waves gently lapping against the shore. "How come you guys get the bigger suite with the better view?" she teased.
Paddy feigned arrogance again and replied haughtily.
"Cause we're The Kel…"
"Kelly Family" Agnes finished for him. "That's right, and nobody would ever throw you out of a hotel" she quoted him smiling.
"I can't believe I said that."
"But at least it's the truth. Gotta give you credit for that."
"I guess."
They fell silent, both remembering back to the fateful day they first met. It seemed like ages ago. It was hard to believe they had been able to reconcile a friendship after starting out on such bad terms.
Agnes sensed Paddy standing close behind her, looking over her shoulder, but was too afraid to turn around and face him. It was much easier to talk to the night sky than to his hypnotizing blue eyes. When she finally broke the silence, her voice came out small and weak.
"Pad, I'm sorry about tonight. Just walking away like that. I just didn't know what else to do."
Her apology startled Paddy. He had been lost in thought, imagining a zillion different scenarios in his head as to how to make the best of this situation. He thought she would have put up more of a fight at his offer. But instead, she came over without so much as a twist of the arm. That had to mean something.
"I'm sorry for pressuring you" he replied quietly once he found his voice.
"Are you really?"
He paused at the question. Of course he wasn't sorry. And he was going to continue to pressure her until she finally caved in.
"No" he answered. He daringly placed his hands on her shoulders and felt her tense up at his touch.
Agnes shut her eyes and tied to calm her frantic heart.
"Then why did you apologize?"
Paddy gently slid his hands down her arms to rest on her hands, lacing his fingers through hers.
"Because I'm trying to convince myself" he whispered huskily, his breath warm on her neck.
"Have you succeeded?" Agnes asked, her voice now diminished to barely a whisper.
"No."
Paddy stepped closer and brushed Agnes's hair off her shoulder, softly kissing the side of her neck.
"I shouldn't be here Paddy."
"But you came anyway" he murmured in between kisses. "That has to mean something."
Agnes finally turned around, looking up at him with confused, watery eyes.
"I don't know what it means. All I know is that I was lying there tonight, watching Scott sleep and feeling so guilty because I kept wishing it was you there next to me instead."
It was as if a huge weight had been lifted off her now that she stopped fighting the truth and finally admitted it.
"What have you done to me, Kelly?" she asked, her voice unsteady.
"The same thing you've done to me, Agnes."
Agnes started to cry and Paddy pulled her close, embracing her tightly, for fear she would slip away again. As he kissed the top of her head, his eyes become watery too. He couldn't believe the strength of his emotion and how hard he'd fallen for her.
"God I love you so much Agnes. I can't lose you."
"This was a one week fling Paddy, like in the movies. It wouldn't work out once we go our separate ways." Agnes was trying so hard to rationalize it all, but every time she heard him say the word 'love', her heart did flip flops and her mind clouded over.
"Yes it would because we'd find ways to make it work" he answered determinedly.
"It's not that simple. We…"
"Shhhh." Paddy put a finger to Agnes's lips to silence her protests and then kissed her softly. "If love is strong enough, it can overcome any obstacles."
His lips met hers again, more hungrily this time and Agnes couldn't fight the temptation any longer. Linking her hands behind his neck, she pulled him even closer, matching his kisses with a fire of her own.
Without tearing his lips away from hers, Paddy scooped Agnes up and carried her over to the lounge chair where he gently lay her down. As Agnes's hands moved restlessly over his chest, he lowered herself down on top of her, straddling both her and the chair.
Paddy tore his lips away from her for a brief second and her hands stopped their delicious movement. Looking down at her lovingly, he said:
"But lets forget about tomorrow or the day after that or the day after that. All I wanna do is hold you here in my arms under the stars tonight and enjoy this precious time we've been blessed with."
"But…"
No sooner than Agnes started to protest did Paddy silence her again, smothering her with kisses.
"Are you sleeping?" Paddy whispered softly to Agnes, whose head was resting comfortably against his chest. He looked down but could only see the top of her head, so he wasn't sure if she was still awake. They had both grown quiet after a while, embracing the tranquil silence.
"No" Agnes murmured quietly, savoring the sensation of lying there next to Paddy. His strong arms were wrapped tightly that she could hear his heart beating. It was all so peaceful and so perfectly wonderful. "All of a sudden, I don't even feel tired."
"What are you thinking about?"
She shifted slightly upward and repositioned her head on his shoulder.
"You really want to know?" she asked, looking over at him with a goofy grin.
"Yes. Even more so now that I see that silly smile on your face."
"I was thinking back to when I was 13 and totally obsessed with the Mickey Mouse Cartoon."
"You!? No way!" Paddy burst out laughing at the absurdity.
Agnes nodded emphatically.
"I was so much of an addict it was scary. Didn't miss an episode. From the very beginning…"
"I don't believe it."
"I'm serious. I wanted to go to the Disney land so much. I asked it the Santa Claus every year! But instead he brought me only ballet stuff, like boots, suits…"
"You are interested on ballet?"
"When I was small I took some lessons. I was even not bad, actually."
"You probably were a big heart breaker" Paddy teased.
Agnes let out a little chuckle but didn't respond. Paddy's eyes lit up.
"You were, weren't you!? Come on, admit it." He tickled her until she was laughing so uncontrollably that she had to give in.
"How do you know me so well?" she asked breathlessly, looking up at him, amazed.
He grew serious for a moment, pondering her question.
"I don't know" he whispered, softly caressing her cheek. "I just do." Then the mischief returned to his eyes and he began tickling her again. "So come on, spill it. How many boyfriends did you have?"
"If I tell you will you please stop tickling me?" she pleaded desperately.
"Maybe…"
"Ok. Ok. I had the crush on Ricky, Tony and Scott. Happy now?"
Paddy smiled victoriously, returning his arms around her to a comforting embrace. "Well, I think you are hot too." Agnes complimented, tracing his lips with her finger.
"So you're saying I'm a hottie?"
"You know you are Kelly. You don't need me to tell you that."
"But you're the only one I want to hear it from." he murmured, pulling her closer for a sweet kiss. "I don't care about anyone's opinion but yours."
"Is that why you are growing your beard and mustache and got rid of that awful chain?" Agnes teased.
"Believe it or not, I did those things for me." Paddy admitted humbly. "In between all the sparring and insults, you actually taught me a few things about life."
"So you're saying I knocked some sense into you?" Agnes smiled smugly.
"You know you did, Agnes. And you've been gloating ever since."
"That's right, because I deflated the monstrous Paddy-ego. I beat you. And won."
"Correction. I won" Paddy proudly corrected her.
Agnes raised a skeptical eyebrow.
"How do you figure that?"
"Because you're here in my arms and I got you right where I want you."
Tucking a strand of hair behind her ear, he tilted her chin up and his mouth possessed hers.
Sweet kisses turned into hungry ones with tangled tongues and lips and then subsided back to gentle again, giving Agnes just enough time to catch her breath.
"Let's call it a tie and leave it at that" she whispered, slipping her hands under Paddy's shirt and pulling it off over his head.
Paddy couldn't believe the overwhelming desire that was possessing him. His heart was pounding in his chest, exploding with emotion. So this was love. It was even too beautiful for words.
"Deal" he murmured, holding on to her tightly, for fear she would slip away.
Dawn was breaking as Agnes awoke. Squinting up at the early morning sun, she experienced a brief moment of confusion as to her surroundings. But then she felt the two strong arms which were still clasped tightly around her waist and she relaxed again as memories of the previous night came rushing back to her. She looked over at Paddy, marveling at his innocence as he slept so soundly, his chest gently rising and falling with each breath.
Agnes cuddled back down beside him, closing her eyes for only a few seconds longer and savoring the sensation of his body against hers. She and Scott had an early plane to catch and she knew she had to return to their room before he woke up. But she had no desire to leave just yet. The moment was too perfect… and she was incredibly content. If anyone had told her a week ago that she would only learn the true meaning of contentment when in Paddy Kelly's arms, she would have laughed at the absurdity. They had started out as sworn enemies, as opposite and volatile as water and oil. Just the thought of him and his immaturity and arrogance had repulsed her. Yet as the days went by, she had witnessed a stunning conformation as he matured right before her eyes.
And it was that man who had finally showed her the true meaning of love. He had expressed more love for her in only two nights' time than Scott had in over the past three years. He had listened to her worries and fears, supported her, comforted her, offered advice and praise, and had cared enough to just want to be there for her.
So how did she expect to get up and leave without even saying goodbye? How could she leave this amazing love which destiny had so graciously granted to her? How could she leave him?
She had lain awake last night, unable to sleep. Lulled by Paddy's soft breathing, she had admired the stars for a long time as she struggled with the unavoidable decision she knew she'd have to make come morning.
They had decided not to discuss the future in fear of ruining the precious time they had left together, but it still had hung on the back of both their minds, a foreboding and ominous presence. In a perfect fairy tale world, the decision would have been simple. Agnes would have stayed in Hawaii with Paddy for the rest of the week while the guys finished their vacation, and then they would have worked things out from there. But unfortunately, she was living in the real world, a world in which she had no choice but to return to. She had responsibilities and obligations back home in Bonn and she couldn't recklessly abandon it all, even if it was in the name of love.
And then there was Scott, of course. She had known for a long time that their relationship was approaching a dead-end, but had just blindly refused to accept it. She felt guilty for falling in love with another man, but her heart had spun recklessly out of control. They needed to have a long talk, and she certainly couldn't let him board the plane this morning without her. She owed him more than that, but the thought of leaving Paddy behind was just as cruel.
Should she wake him and say goodbye? Or would it be less painful to just leave quietly and never look back? Would she want to reestablish contact with him once she settled down back at home? Or would it be best to dub this week as a summer fling and nothing more? But how could it be dismissed as a fling when the word "love" had been exchanged between them?
These were all questions which she had agonized over last night, yet had been unable to reach a rational decision, due to the conflicting interests of her heart and her mind.
Paddy shifted slightly in his sleep and instinctively pulled Agnes closer to him. The faint scent of his cologne had become a comfort to Agnes and she savored each breath as if it were her last. She ran her hand over his shoulder, down his arm to his hand, and gently laced her fingers through his.
Her heart ached because deep down she knew what she had to do. Paddy was the celebrity. He lived his life in the spotlight, the object of adoration by millions of teenage girls worldwide. There was no room for a girlfriend in that picture. A serious relationship would only tie him down, and in the career path he had chosen, he needed to be free. Free to tour, free to travel and free to live without the burden of a ball and chain. Besides, long distance relationships were always doomed from the start. What good was a relationship if you couldn't spend enough time with the one you loved? Phone calls and emails would get old real fast. Birthdays and holidays would be spent alone. It would be selfish of her to ask him to make such sacrifices. He had worked way too hard to earn his success that it would be absurd to gamble it away.
His career was too demanding, and so would medical school be once she began in September. She no longer looked upon it with anxiety, but rather with a newfound sense of excitement and optimism, which Paddy had helped her achieve. It would still be a big adjustment in the beginning until she got used to the arduous routine, that was an unavoidable mountain she still needed to climb. Unfortunately, a relationship would only complicate that adjustment ten times over. She needed her mind and heart to be free because medicine had become her sole dedication. For the next four years, it would be her only love, her only passion. She had made a commitment and was determined to see it through.
As cold and heartless as that seemed, it was the truth. There was no way around it. There would be no room in her life for two loves anymore. One needed to be sacrificed for the benefit of the other. There was no doubt in her mind that she loved him. That was why she had to let him go. It was what was best for both of them.
Agnes's eyes grew watery as she gazed at him longingly. He was so beautiful. She would have never grown tired of watching him sleep… Raising his hand to her lips, she kissed it softly as her tears began to fall. She carefully entangled herself from his arms so as not to wake him and finally found the strength to slip her hand out of his. Standing over him, she experienced a sudden spell of nausea as regret, guilt, and longing hit her like a ton of bricks.
This was the end. Once she walked out, she knew she would never see him again. Praying furiously that Paddy would be okay with her decision, she leaned over and gently brushed her lips across his for one last lingering kiss.
"Please forgive me for this." she murmured in his ear. "In time, you'll understand."
Then she unhooked her necklace and fastened it around his neck.
"I love you, Pad" she whispered, wishing she hadn't been so stubborn and had told him sooner. A few of her tears spilled onto his cheek and she wiped them away sadly. "I love more than you'll ever know."
Brushing away a few stray hair, she kissed his forehead and then quietly slipped back inside to return to her room.
I don't know why, but today I feel to talk... :) Well, we have done the story together very well. But, do you think it's time to finish the story? Let it be like this... Agnes comes home with her boyfriend and Paddy to his life like it was just a summer love. Knowing me I'll separate them (I already did actually) if we go on with this, life can't be too beautiful :) I wouldn't like to change it to a tragedy, what do you think? I know some of you love this kind of story, but c'mon let Paddy breath :) He is almost in every tragic stories on the net. What might he thinks of us when he find out about it? :)) On the other hand, it don't have to be a tragic story if you don't want to, because it's always you who choose... Anyway, the question of this week is: Is it time to finish the story?
Uhlala... 89% of you don't want to finish the story. Only 11% are for finishing it. Poor me :) Read the next part!!
