PART 6

Last time you decided that Agnes yield Paddy's charm. Now read and vote + submit your comments.

It seemed like nothing she said anymore was harsh or cold enough to drive him away. She had erroneously crossed that precious line, letting down her guard for that one brief moment, which made Paddy think he now possessed the upper hand.
"I'm not a damsel and I wasn't in distress" she muttered and hurried on ahead to catch up with the rest of the group. She couldn't handle being alone with Paddy anymore. She spotted Jimmy and Maite in the distance, surprised at how far behind they had lagged.
"Hey guys!! Wait up, will ya?"
Maite turned and laughed in amusement when he saw how far behind Agnes and Paddy had fallen.
"Come on! How come you are slower than me?" she called back, waving them on. "We've made it!!! It's right up ahead!"
"Halleluiah!" Paddy shouted in relief. "It's about time!" He turned to Agnes with a mischievous smile. "Race you to the end?"
"Sure. One… two… three… Go!" She started off with him but then stopped purposely and watched in satisfaction as he ran all the way alone, probably still thinking she was right beside him. When he reached the guys, he threw up his hands and did a victory dance until Jimmy informed him that he had been racing alone. Paddy turned back in surprise to see Agnes exactly where he had left her. She waved smugly and he chuckled to himself, knowing she had definitely gotten the better of him that time.

The view was breathtaking. The tour guide had been right. Their trip to Hawaii would have been incomplete without this. They stood on the top of Mt. Mauna and in the distance could see Mt. Kilauea before them, a historic volcano that had been dormant for hundreds of years. The island of Maui was sprawled beneath them, along with the Pacific Ocean disappearing into the horizon for as far as the eye could see.
"I'm the king of the world!!!" Joey shouted proudly, his arms raised in the air as he listened to his vibrating echo. Then he turned back to the group and smiled sheepishly. "I've always wanted to try that."
"Do it again" Agnes told him, fishing her camera out of her backpack. I want to take a picture."
Joey obligingly posed for her as she snapped a shot.
"You're a much better Leo" she said, winking at him. "And a lot cuter, too."
She used up the whole roll of film in a matter of minutes, making sure she shot the scenic view from every possible angle. She also snuck a few candid shots of the guys horsing around. Then Joey took the camera and forced her to pose for a few, encouraging her to join in their horseplay. He took one of her with Johnny and Maite and Jimmy, and then Jimmy took one of her with Joey.
"Well, well, look at this" Jimmy said, holding up the camera. "One picture left. Better make it a classic."
Joey snatched the camera back, smiling slyly.
"She hasn't taken one with Paddy yet. Think you two can call a 2 second truce and pose for a pic?" he asked them.
"Only if I can give her devils' horns" Paddy cracked.
Agnes frowned at him.
"They're called rabbit ears."
He flashed her a toothy grin.
"I know, but I was improvising to better suit your personality."
"So can I take the picture?" Joey asked eagerly.
"Sure."
"No" Agnes replied firmly. "Let's go listen to the tour guide. Maybe ya'll learn something useful."
"Yeah. Like how old the volcano is" Paddy said, rolling his eyes. "That sure will help us in the real world."
Agnes shook her head in disgust at his immaturity. The one, serious, sincere moment that had passed between them was long gone by now. She knew it would only be a matter of time before he reverted back to his old self.
"This is one of the main reasons tourists travel to Maui" the tour guide was telling the group that had gathered around him, interested in the volcano's history. "Honolulu's got the beaches and the clubs, but we've got the scenery. Can't get any better than this."
"When was the last time it erupted?" an eager tourist asked.
"Probably back in the 1860's if I remember correctly."
"Is it true every year the natives sacrifice a virgin into the volcano as an offering?" Paddy wise-cracked.
Agnes turned to him with feigned shock.
"Why? Are you volunteering? That's so noble of you!"
"Of course I'd love to throw you in, but the volcano would probably spit you right back out-Little Miss Plaything."
Even though Paddy's insult was delivered without any of his old animosity and was meant to be taken lightly, it still hit Agnes where it hurt.
"If you say so" she replied airily, as thoughts of last night and her problems with Scott returned to haunt her.
"I know so" Paddy shot back smugly.
"Actually" the tour guide intervened, nodding at Paddy "there are many legends about historical sacrifices like that, but if you ask my opinion, they are all fiction. Nothing like that ever happened-at least not on our soil. As for the rest of the world, that's a whole other story. Besides, I think you watch too much TV."
"We've been trying to tell him that for years" Johnny joked. "But not it seems to be too late. The damage to his brain is irreversible."
The guide shook his head in amusement.
"You guys sure are one crazy group." Then he turned to the rest of the tourists and announced "Feel free to walk around, kick back, enjoy the view, take some pictures. We'll head back down in about a half hour."
Agnes left the guys collapsed on the grass in the shade and went over to sit on a boulder near the precipice. She still could not believe the view. It was like something out of a painting, or even a scenic postcard. She just wished Scott could have been there to enjoy it with her…
Scott. His trusting, caring smile filled her mind, tightening her chest with suffocating guilt. Because, she admitted to herself, the way she had just felt with Paddy's arms around her made something so innocent as a hug as close to cheating as she had ever come.
But she didn't even like Paddy. That was the most confusing part. In fact, she started out despising him, but even though the hatred had waned into a less severe form of dislike, she still found him terribly immature, arrogant, crude and annoying.
So why were his boyish good looks suddenly attracting her as they attracted every other lovesick girl in the world? Agnes shook her head in wonderment because she honestly did not have an honest answer to that question.
'Maybe because you're human, Agnes' a little voice inside her spoke up. 'Your stubbornness can't last forever. You're bound to give in sooner or later.'
'Give in to what?' she asked the voice.
'Temptation.'
She scoffed at that ridiculous response.
'The day that I am tempted by Paddy Kelly is the day I take a bullet to the head.'
'But you were just tempted by him before.'
'That wasn't temptation… That was…'
'Yeah?'
'Longing for companionship and affection.'
'Which Scott has been neglecting you of?'
'I guess…'

Agnes sighed quietly as the realization sunk in. Something was definitely lacking in her relationship with Scott. Communication? Compassion? Companionship? Affection? Actually it was all of the above… Yet she didn't know what to do about it. How could she talk to him about it when they never even saw each other for more than 10 minutes each day?
"Hey, why so glum?" Jimmy appeared beside her, smiling warmly.
"Just have a lot on my mind, that's all." Agnes shrugged.
"Is that seat taken?" He pointed to the rock.
"Nope. Help yourself." Agnes waved him over.
Jimmy settled down beside her and let out a low whistle as she soaked in the view.
"It's amazing, isn't it?"
Agnes smiled faintly, dispelling her troublesome thoughts for the moment.
"It sure is. I'm glad we roughed it and made the hike after all."
"And just think, you were ready to back out this morning like a chicken" he teased.
"Well thanks for twisting my arm."
"Any time… So is everything OK?"
Agnes shrugged casually, forcing a reassuring smile.
"Of course. I'm just a little tired."
Jimmy knew she was only putting on a front. He could see in her eyes a whirlwind of worries and doubts, and could hear the uncertainty in her voice. But he would not pressure her to talk if she didn't want to. He'd leave that task up to Paddy.
"Tell me about it. Joey's already making plans to go clubbing tonight. All I wanna do is go home and go to sleep."
"So is Joey the party animal of the group?"
"I'd say it was a tie between him and Maite. But Paddy is a close second."
"You and Johnny are the party poopers then, huh?" she teased.
"I guess you could call us that, he said good-naturedly. So how bout you? A party animal or a party pooper?"
"Definitely a party pooper" Agnes answered quickly without even having to think about it. "Everyone says I'm way too serious and have to lighten up before I crack."
"I get that speech a lot, too." Jimmy chuckled.
"Do you ever wish you were born with a different personality?"
Her question puzzled him and he thought it over for a second before answering.
"Sometimes I do-like when I see how outgoing Maite is or how carefree Joey is, I wish I was more like them, but then when I try acting that way too, it doesn't seem to work. It's just not in me, ya know?"
"You took the words right out of my mouth." Agnes smiled faintly.
"Can I give you a piece of advice?"
"Please do."
"It's something I've learned over the past years-being in this crooked music business and all. Never compromise yourself, your values, or your beliefs for anyone."
She nodded in agreement, shamefully averting her gaze as reminders of her problems with Scott returned.
Jimmy noticed her sudden change in mood.
"I'm sorry. Did I say something wrong?"
"Not at all" Agnes said, smiling back up at him. "You're absolutely right. We deserve to be respected for who we are-not for who people want us to be."
And that was exactly what she would tell Scott tonight. She knew he'd understand and try to be more sensitive… wouldn't he?"

"Look at they way they're laughing and talking" Paddy grumbled, pointing over at Agnes and Jimmy from his seat in the shade. "Why won't she talk to me like that?"
"Maybe she's got a crush on him" Johnny suggested jokingly.
"Maybe he's got a crush on her" Joey added.
"Or maybe they're madly in love with each other and are secretly planning their elopement at this very moment!" Maite announced dramatically.
Paddy grunted and watched sourly as Jimmy and Agnes interacted like they were the oldest of friends. He thought he and Agnes had made progress today. But that was the total mystery about her-Just when you thought you were getting closer, she put her walls up and became hostile and distant again. It was like a vicious, never-ending cycle.
"So what happened when we left you two alone?" Joey asked slyly. "You fell pretty far behind."
"Nothing really. We just made out for a while and she was about to take off my pants when we realized we were moving too fast."
"You don't have to be sarcastic" Johnny quipped cheerfully. Paddy's foul mood meant he still had made no progress with Agnes. There was no doubt in his mind that he and Maite would win this bet.
"Who says I'm being sarcastic? Paddy countered back defensively. It's not that far-fetched. It could have happened."
"In your dreams maybe" Maite said.
Paddy scowled at her.
"Hey-Agnes wants me. I can see it in her eyes. The way she looks at me and gets all tense and flustered and stuff. It'll only be a matter of time before we're making out for real."
"Well make sure you take a picture because that will be something I've got to see" Johnny commented, trying to hide his amused smile.
Joey stood up.
"Hey, speaking of pictures, let's go have some fun, Pad." He held up Agnes's camera which he still had in his possession and smiled mischievously at his younger brother.
Paddy raised an interested eyebrow.
"What have you got in mind?"
"Why don't you sneak up behind her for a surprise attack?' Joey shrugged.
"She kill you, Paddy" Johnny commented matter-of-factly.
"Correction" Maite said to him. "She'd slaughter him."
A slow smile spread across Paddy's face as he stood up to join Joey. "Lucky me then. Come on. Let's have fun."
Joey slapped him a high five and made his way over to where Jimmy and Agnes were still engrossed in deep conversation.
"Having fun kids?" Joey asked cheerfully, holding the camera behind his back, purposely out of view of Agnes.
"Tons" Jimmy teased lightly. "I love this weather. I'm baking like a clam."
Agnes nudged him playfully.
"Stop complaining. I thought you liked the view."
"I do. But I cringe at the thought of how sunburned I'll be by tonight."
"Well, you're still coming dancing with us, one way or the other" Joey reprimanded him. "No excuses."
"I'm not going anywhere tonight. I'm going home and going to sleep."
Agnes was so entertained by their playful banter that she was completely unaware of Paddy sneaking up behind her. He grabbed her waist, pulling her slightly backward off the rock and into his arms. She shrieked in surprise and Joey quickly snapped the picture while Paddy posed with a mischievous smile.
"Gotcha" he whispered in her ear.
Agnes struggled to free herself, but couldn't regain her balance to push away from him.
"Let go of me" she ordered through clenched teeth.
"OK" Paddy said flippantly. "If that's what you want." He released his hold on her, letting her fall backwards for a second before catching her again.
She erupted in another shriek and he chuckled in amusement as he returned her to her upright position.
Once Agnes regained her balance, she pushed herself out of his grip and hopped off the rock.
"Don't ever do that again" she said angrily, turning around to confront him.
Paddy couldn't help but laugh when he saw how disheveled she had become. She swiped her hair off her face in frustration.
"It's not funny."
"Sure it is" Paddy replied grinning at her. "Wait till you see the look on your face in that picture."
At the reminder, Agnes turned and confronted Joey. She held out her hand sternly, waiting for him to hand over her camera.
He smiled sheepishly as he gave it back.
"I'm sorry. The temptation was too great. I couldn't resist."
"Traitor" Agnes mumbled, but then winked at him to let him know she was only teasing.
"You know you're gonna have to send me a copy of that pic so I can frame it" Paddy said to her, still smirking as he took over her spot on the rock.
Agnes turned back to him.
"A copy? What makes you so convinced I'd even want to keep the original?" she asked wryly.
"So you'll always remember me when you think of this vacation" Paddy said, batting his eyelashes.
"You're the only part of this vacation I'll be sure to quickly forget" Agnes shot back sweetly. "I'll make sure I burn the picture."
Joey put a hand on her shoulder, intervening once again.
"Now, now kids. Be nice."
"I'm still mad at you too, you know." Agnes regarded him with feigned disapproval.
"I'll buy you a new roll of film" he bargained. "How's that?"
Agnes pretended to think it over.
"Deal" she said, after a moment and reached out to shake his hand.
"What a typical girl" Paddy cracked to Joey. "Letting you buy her forgiveness."
Jimmy held up his hands when he saw the unappreciative scowl Agnes flashed Paddy.
"Whoa. I'm getting outta here before the sparks begin to fly."
"I'm with you" Joey agreed and they hurried off to join Johnny and Maite, leaving Agnes and Paddy to duke it out amongst themselves.
"A 'typical girl'?" Agnes sneered. "It figures you'd throw out a comment like that, because the only kinds of girls you know are 'typical'! Teenyboppers, sluts, airheads, gold diggers…" She ticked each one off on her fingers as she went down the list.
"Hmmm… do I detect a little jealousy here?" Paddy teased.
"Oh yeah. I'm sooo jealous of you. I wish I had all those girls fawning over me instead." Agnes rolled her eyes.
Paddy laughed.
"Really? I never knew you went that way, Agnes. That's too bad, cause I was kinda hoping you and I could have a little fun." He gave her a suggestive smile and enjoyed watching as her eyes narrowed full of eager. "Alright. Alright. It was a joke. I take it back. Geez. Don't you have even a tiny sense of humor buried somewhere in there?"
Agnes smiled sweetly at him.
"Of course I do. And I use it to mock your pathetic, sorry, state every day. No other vacation has ever been so entertaining."
Paddy shrugged off the insult, still smirking at her.
"I still think you're jealous of all those kinds of girls you listed before."
Agnes had begun walking back to join the rest of the guys but she stopped after hearing his bold accusation.
"Me? Jealous of them? Ha!! At least I have a life and will be doing something productive with it."
"Yeah, but you don't have me. You know you're missing out-big time."
"Thank God for small favors" she replied sarcastically and quickly hurried away so he couldn't get the last word in. She sat down between Maite and Jimmy and sighed. "Is it time to go yet?"
"You mean you're not enjoying becoming one with nature?" Maite teased.
"Not when Paddy's around" Agnes muttered, taking a drink from her water bottle.
"What did he do this time?" Johnny asked in a tired voice.
"Absolutely nothing" Paddy said, joining them as well and still smiling at how he had ruffled Agnes's feathers once again. "I'm trying to teach her how to have sense of humor. But obviously it's not working."
"Because your sense of humor is disgusting" Jimmy cracked.
Paddy ignored him and pointed to Agnes's water bottle.
"How's my backwash taste?" he asked with a mischievous grin.
Agnes's eyes widened and she sputtered as she spat out her mouthful of water, suddenly remembering she had stupidly let Paddy drink from it only minutes before.
He chuckled in amusement.
"Agnes let me have a sip of her water because mine was too warm" he explained to his brothers.
Johnny turned to her in surprise.
"You were that generous to him!? I don't believe it!"
"What did he do to deserve something like that?" Maite teased.
Agnes threw the bottle at Paddy who caught it with ease.
"Finish it" she said sourly. Then she turned to Maite and said "I'd rather not talk about it. It'll only inflate his ego even more."
Jimmy snickered at her comment, because they all knew it was true.
"I saved her from taking a nasty fall" Paddy bragged. "And she offered me some of her water in return."
"What a beautiful, touching moment" Joey joked, dabbing at his eyes.
"Which I'm sure will never happen between them again" Johnny cracked, and only the guys caught on to the hidden meaning behind his joke.
"Don't be too sure of that" Paddy countered, winking at Agnes.
Agnes only responded with a laugh of disgust.

"How come there's not one edible thing in this restaurant?" Agnes groaned, leafing through her menu with a look of distaste.
After returning from the hike, they were given a tour of Maui, ending with dinner at an oceanfront restaurant. Their dreaded flight back to Honolulu in the mini propeller jet was scheduled for 9 PM.
"Don't tell me you're a vegetarian" Joey teased.
"Or a fruitarian" Maite added.
Everyone looked at her strangely.
"What? You've never seen Notting Hill?"
"I think Agnes's an anti-seafood-tarian" Johnny said winking at her.
"Huh?"
"I don't eat seafood!" Agnes had to spell it out for them.
"Why the hell not?" Paddy asked, offended. "It's the most precious of all God's creations. We were put on this earth to enjoy its savory, delectable, mouth-watering varieties!!"
"Paddy's a huge seafood buff" Jimmy explained when he saw the curious look on Agnes's face.
Paddy leaned over her shoulder and pointed to one of the items on the menu.
"Try it. If you don't like it, I'll finish it. But I'll bet you'll like it and will be begging for seconds."
Agnes pushed his arm away and slid her chair closer to Jimmy.
"How did I get stuck sitting next to him?"
"Better you than me" Jimmy cracked.
When Paddy saw Agnes smile at Jimmy's joke, he was mesmerized for a moment, trying to imagine how it would feel if just once, when he cracked a joke, she would smile in the exact same way. She truly had an enchanting smile. It was mysterious, yet it still said a thousand words. It lit up her whole face and made her seem almost… beautiful in a way.
Would he ever see the day when she would smile at him like that? Whoa. Since when had his feelings gotten so out of hand? A little slip and Agnes ended up in his arms by accident, yet the embrace had continued to haunt him for the remainder of the day. For some strange reason, his arms ached to hold her again. But that was just the 500 bucks talking.
"Hey space-boy" Joey nudged him, jerking him back to reality.
"What?" Paddy tore his eyes away from Agnes and turned to Joey.
"What are you getting?"
"The spaghetti with clams and squid."
"Guess I'll have a salad" Agnes sighed.
"Boring." Jimmy coughed under his breath.
"I'd rather be boring than be sick" she said, laughing at him.
Paddy dragged his chair closer to Agnes, purposely attempting annoyance. "So seafood makes you sick, huh?"
"And you do too, of course" she reminded him sweetly.
"Remind me again why that is?" he asked amused.
Joey groaned at the prospect of yet another verbal war.
"Guys, not now, please? They'll kick us out of here."
"You don't want to know" Agnes said to Paddy, annoyed that he continued to be unnerved by her insults.
"Sure I do. Humor me."
Agnes opened her mouth to respond, but just then, the waiter appeared to take their orders. When he got to Agnes, he gave her a funny look after she ordered nothing but a plain salad.
"I keep telling her the fish don't have feelings and don't care that we eat them" Paddy explained to the waiter, trying to keeping a straight face. "But she just doesn't believe me. She's afraid the fish will come back as flesh-eating mutants in their second life for revenge." He shook his head in exasperation and the waiter followed suit as he walked away.
"So why did you guys come on this vacation alone?" Agnes asked, changing the subject before she strangled Paddy. "Don't you have girlfriends?"
"If we tell you, we'd have to kill you" Johnny joked.
Jimmy playfully slapped Johnny on the back of his head.
"We don't really have the time to dedicate to a serious relationship just yet" he answered truthfully.
"Kind of like Scott" Paddy added slyly. "But at least we have the decency not to get involved in the first place and play with a girl's heart."
Agnes glared at him. Even though she had grown surprisingly used to his insinuations by now, they still offended her when they hit a soft spot close to home.
"That's just an excuse, because the bottom line is you can't get a girl" she shot back at him.
"Ha! I can have as many girls as I want!"
"Then why haven't I seen you with any these past few days?"
Paddy was momentarily stunned by her question, his mind blank with an appropriate comeback. He certainly couldn't admit that the reason he had his sights on only one girl was because of a $500 bet. He looked across the table in desperation to his brothers for help.
"Why are you keeping score of the number of times he scores?" Joey asked slyly.
Agnes frowned at him in disapproval.
"I thought you were on my side" she teased.
He shrugged sheepishly, winking at her.
"Sorry. I couldn't resist."
"Wait a minute. Hold up!" Paddy said, smiling at Agnes. "I want an answer to Joey's question, because it sure was a dandy! Why have you been keeping score of the number of times I score?"
Agnes regarded him unflustered and confident.
"Because don't you think when someone brags nonstop about how lucky they are with the ladies, it's kinda strange when they spend most of their time alone?"
"I'm very picky when it comes to women" Paddy explained.
"Sure you are" Johnny snickered. "That's why those three bimbos you went out with the other night were of the finest quality."
"They were just the appetizers" Paddy replied arrogantly. "I'm saving my energy up for the main course and damn, it's gonna taste real sweet."
"That's it!" Agnes said, throwing her napkin down and standing up. "I've heard enough of this chauvinistic talk. You are a pig." she said pointing to Paddy. "And a disgrace to all men."
"That's exactly what I told him the other day!" Maite exclaimed.
Agnes reached over to slap him a high five.
"I'll be back. I need to escape to the ladies' room before I throw up." She sneered at Paddy but he just retaliated with a toothy grin of victory.
What was she thinking before? To have actually admitted to liking the feeling of being held in his arms? That must have been the adrenaline influencing her thoughts. Her near-fall had been pretty traumatic. No wonder her thoughts had gone a little haywire. But now that she had plenty of time to recover, just the thought of Paddy and his behavior appalled her once again. Appetizers. Who did he think he was? Smiling to herself, she disappeared into the bathroom.

"Appetizers!?" Jimmy had to laugh at Paddy's choice of analogies.
"Well, I couldn't tell her she was the object of a heavy duty bet, could I?"
"There were plenty of more subtle ways to say it."
"Naa… I like annoying her like that" Paddy said with a mischievous smile. "See how flustered she gets? She definitely wants me. I can see it in her eyes."
"I think you've got too much sun today, Paddy" Maite joked.
"No. I think he might actually be on to something" Joey said, defending his younger brother. "Maybe it's not as obvious as Paddy says it is, but there's definitely something there. She just hides it really well."
"That's absurd" Johnny said, nodding politely to the waiter after he delivered his plate of food. "Why would she want Paddy when she already has a rich and successful boyfriend who I'm guessing she loves very much to make such sacrifices for him?"
"I don't know" Joey said, digging into his food. "Why are you asking me? Ask Paddy. Why does she want you, Pad?"
Paddy didn't answer. He had been too busy picking through his bowl of spaghetti, searching for a tiny squid equipped with a full set of tentacles. He gingerly picked it up on his fork and dropped it on top of Agnes's salad.
"You're a dead man" Jimmy said in disbelief, shocked at his brother's audacity.
"A true masochist" Maite whispered in delight as Agnes made her way back to the table.
"I just want her to taste it" Paddy whispered back. "She won't even notice it's in there."
"Wow. They already brought out the food?" Agnes asked as she sat back down. "That was quick." She grimaced when she took a look at each guys' plate. "How is it?"
"It's actually the best lobster I've ever had" Joey said between mouthfuls.
"Glad to hear it." She picked up her fork but froze with it in midair above her salad when she noticed the octopus.
"That's not even funny" she said, attacking Paddy.
"What's not funny?" Paddy threw her a casual glance.
She pointed to her salad, with a no-nonsense look on her face.
"Oops. How'd that get in there?"
"I'm not laughing, Paddy. Get it out. Now."
"But I didn't put it in there."
"Sure. It just crawled on over."
"It must have. The little suckers have a mind of their own, you know."
"Get it out" she ordered again, more sternly this time.
"I want you to try it."
"That ain't happening."
"I dare you to try it. Or are you too chicken?"
She looked at him in exasperation.
"Why must everything be a game with you?"
"Because I like to win. I love the satisfaction of victory-the satisfaction of knowing I was right and you are a chicken like I've said all along."
Agnes scowled at his arrogant smirk, closed her eyes and forced the horridly slimy squid into her mouth. After gagging a few times, she finally managed to swallow it, and then downed her soda in three long gulps to wash out the taste.
"Knew that'd convince you" Paddy teased, slapping her on the back.
"How was it?" Jimmy asked Agnes tentatively.
"The absolute worst thing I ever ate" she croaked.
"But at least you're still alive" Joey pointed out.
"Barely."
Paddy chuckled in amusement and Agnes glared at him, still watery-eyed from the squid.
"I will get you for this" she threatened him sweetly. "I don't know how yet, but I will."
