PART 7

You wanted Scott to be a jerk, now you have it :)

"So which club are we hitting tonight?" Joey asked the guys as they stepped off the elevator onto their floor.
It was 10:30 and they had just returned from the airport. The flight back on the propeller jet was still nerve-wracking for Agnes but at least there were extra seats this time. A few tourists had decided to say overnight in Maui, so the extra room on the plane was welcomed by all. Agnes made sure she had sat on the opposite side as Paddy, because her patience with him had worn thin back at the restaurant.
"No club" Jimmy said in between yawns. "I'm going right to sleep."
"But it's only 10:30" Joey protested. "The night is young."
"And what better way to spend it than by sleeping?"
Joey shook his head in disgust and turned to Agnes instead.
"Are you up for a little dancing tonight?"
"Thanks but no. I'm beat, too, Joe. Besides, Scott's probably back by now anyway."
"Grrr…" Joey turned to the rest of his brothers. "Guys? How about it? You're coming, right?"
"Ask me in an hour after I've taken a nap" Maite said, yawning as well. "My legs are killing me."
Agnes stopped at her door, watching in amusement as Joey tried to persuade his brothers.
"Goodnight guys" she called to them.
"Goodnight Agnes" they all called back in unison, continuing on to their room. Only Paddy lagged behind with Agnes. He leaned against the wall, watching her open the door.
"Did you want something?" she asked coolly, the key still in the lock.
"Just curious if Scott's home yet."
"Of course he is. Where else would…" Her voice trailed off as she opened the door and a dark, empty suite greeted her. "Ok. So he's not back yet. It's still early."
Paddy could hear the disappointment in her voice and he felt a pang of sympathy for her.
"Why don't you come out with us?" he blurted out as a sincere invitation rather than one with a hidden agenda.
"Thanks but I think I've had about enough of you for one day."
"Sorry about the squid."
"Scott will be proud to hear I tried it." Agnes shrugged.
"Is everything okay between you two?" Paddy asked quietly after a moment.
"Never been better" she snapped back quickly, pushing him back out the door. "Now go away please."
"Alright. I'm going. Geez! You could be a little more subtle, you know."
"How's this for subtle?" she asked, shutting the door in his face.
Paddy smiled to himself at her feistiness.
"I'm sure feeling the love now!" he teased, yelling through the door.
"Go away!" Agnes groaned again.
"Ok. But you know you can't get rid of me that easily. Tomorrow is a brand new day. The possibilities are endless!"
And as he walked away, the creative wheels in his head began to turn, already planning his next move.

'The possibilities are endless.' Agnes scoffed at Paddy's comment, upset with herself for allowing him to get the last word in. And what did he mean by that smart ass remark? Did he look forward to torturing her each day? Had it become a game to him? And if so, how did she ever allow it to get that far?
Sighing to herself, she changed into her pajamas and collapsed onto the bed. It had been a long day, just as she had predicted. And to top it all off, Scott wasn't even around to greet her when she returned. She had wanted to cuddle on his lap and relay the whole days' worth of events to him as he stroked her hair and massaged her shoulders like he used to. But lately, he just seemed so uninterested in anything she had to say.
Is everything okay between you two? Why would Paddy ask a question like that? Was he just being his usual sarcastic and spiteful self? Or was it possible he somehow caught on to the tension between her and Scott because she was just so bad at disguising it?

"I cannot believe you brought us to a strip joint, Joey" Johnny hissed in disapproval at his brother's choice of clubs.
"Hey, the elevator man told me it's the hottest spot on the island!" Joey protested. He took a quick survey of the place and sighed in contentment. "Look at this place. It's heaven!"
"I can see the headlines already" an unhappy Jimmy mused. "Our names will be dragged through the mud… our sweet innocent reputations ruined… our…"
Joey's hands clamped down on his shoulders.
"For once can you stop being the Daddy and behave as any normal guy surrounded by beautiful women?"
"Fine" he muttered to Joey. "Go have your fun. But in an hour we're outta here. You're lucky I even agreed to come in the first place."
"Yes sir!" Joey saluted him dramatically.
Paddy laughed and began singing a parody song but stopped after Jimmy flashed him a dirty look.
"What?" he asked innocently.
"You shouldn't even be in here."
"Yeah, cover his eyes, will ya?" Johnny teased.
"Hey, I'm a big boy now. You all seem to forget that" Paddy told them proudly. "I can have all the fun I want."
"Well, good luck then" Jimmy shot back and walked off with Johnny.
"Wait!" Paddy called desperately after them. They stopped and regarded him in amusement. "What do I do?"
"Anything you want. You're the big boy now" Johnny told him, exchanging a smug smile with Jimmy before walking off.
Paddy stood in the doorway, slightly uncomfortable about being left alone. He had never been in one of these places before. He didn't even know what he was supposed to do. He scanned the room and saw his brothers and the rest of the clientele sitting at various tables, being entertained by the provocative dancers. All he had to do was follow suit and he'd be fine.
He walked into the room with confidence, trying to pretend like he belonged there. He made his way over to the main stage in the center of the room and took an empty seat next to three young businessmen still dressed in their suits and ties from work.
He tried not to eavesdrop, but they were talking pretty loud, most likely already buzzed.
"Look at her, one mused, pointing to the dancer, his eyes already glazed over from the alcohol. Wouldn't you just love to take her home with you for a night? Just one night of the wildest, steamiest sex you've ever had?"
Paddy laughed to himself seeing how alcohol had the effect of converting sophisticated businessmen into horny teenagers all over again. He sipped his gin and tonic slowly, swearing he would never get to that point.
"Ahhh, don't tempt me Dave" the second guy said wistfully. "I've been on this island for almost a week now and still haven't gotten any. What am I doing wrong?"
"Being yourself" the third one cracked, finishing up his drink and signaling to the waitress for another one.
"I wouldn't talk, Scottie" he protested back. "You made the biggest mistake by bringing your girlfriend down here with you."
"Yeah, what were you thinking?" the other one added. "Didn't you want to have a little fun?"
"Maybe he enjoys it" Dave cracked, slapping Scott on the back.

Paddy snuck a casual glance at the young, dark haired man sitting beside him. Could this be Agnes's Scott? That would be too much of a coincidence, wouldn't it? He turned back and pretended to watch the dancers, but kept an attentive ear tuned in to their conversation.
"Who says I don't have fun?" Scott asked in defense.
They both burst out in an amused chuckle.
"Maybe because you come into work every morning looking a wee bit… shall we say… frustrated?"
"I do not" Scott said, slightly embarrassed.
"It's okay Scottie" the other one said, feigning sympathy. "We're your friends. You can tell us anything. Like why Agnes is holding out on you."

Paddy froze at the mention of her name.
So this was Agnes's Scott… and he was there, in a strip club getting drunk with his friends while she was home alone back in the suite, patiently waiting for his return like the devoted girlfriend.
"Agnes is… in a weird state right now" Scott sighed. "I don't know what's up with her."
"One of those virgin-till-marriage girls, huh?" Dave asked distastefully.
Scott shrugged casually, taking another sip of his drink.
"I don't think it's that extreme… she has to come around eventually."
"And until then you're supposed to wait patiently like a saint!? Hell no Scottie! This ain't the 1800's anymore. You're entitled to a little fun. And if Agnes doesn't wanna be a part of it, then that's her loss." He slammed his drink on the table and stood up. "In fact, I'll be right back. Don't go nowhere."

Paddy couldn't believe what he was hearing. He turned and gaped in shock at Scott who had been speaking so disrespectfully about his girlfriend. Scott sensed the uneasy feeling that he was being watched and he turned to see the young man beside him was staring at him strangely.
"Is there a problem?" he asked annoyed.
Paddy fought back his defensive urges to give Scott a piece of his mind, for he knew he had no place getting involved.
"I was just wondering if you had the time" he replied coolly.
Scott squinted at his watch by the candlelight.
"It's 1:30."
"Thanks." Paddy turned away and tried to focus his attention back on the dancers.
Scott's friend reappeared five minutes later with a blonde waitress at his heels.
"Scottie" he said proudly. "This is Desiree. She just finished her shift and is looking for a little fun tonight."
"Hey Scott" Desiree said in a throaty seductive voice as she made herself comfortable on Scott's lap. She ran her hands over his shoulders and through his hair. "You're a cutie" she giggled, taking a sip of his drink. "Wanna get outta here?"
Scott looked to his friends in surprise and indecision and they nodded encouragingly towards the door. After hesitating for a moment, he downed the last of his drink and then grabbed Desiree's hand and hurried out of the club. Paddy gaped after them in utter shock. He did not just witness the ultimate deception a boyfriend could ever commit. And not just anyone's boyfriend, but Agnes's. He was overcome with anger and a sudden urge to run after Scott and punch the daylights out of him. How dare he? Paddy's heart went out to Agnes at that moment and he couldn't bear to think of her devastation if and when she ever found out. Suddenly feeling sick to his stomach, he found Jimmy to tell him he was leaving and then hailed a cab back to the hotel.

By the time Agnes woke the next morning, Scott had already vanished. He left behind a note on the nightstand. It read "Feel like I haven't seen you in days. I miss you terribly. Dinner tonight. Be ready by 8."
Agnes smiled with relief because that sounded like the good old Scott she used to know. All those worries last night were for nothing. Scott had just been busy, that's all. He came down here to work, not to play, and that's exactly what he had been doing. She, of all people, should understand that and not let Paddy instill any more doubts in her mind.
Filled with anticipation of her date with Scott that night, she showered quickly and made her way downstairs for breakfast with a renewed sense of optimism. Today was going to be a great day. Sure enough, she ran into the guys in the dining room. They were on their way out, but Paddy wasn't with them. The day couldn't possibly get any better.
"Good morning Blondie" Maite greeted her pleasantly.
"Morning guys. Did you go clubbing last night?" she asked Joey.
Remembering Jimmy's warning not to dare speak of their strip club adventure, he pouted sadly.
"No. Daddy Jimmy ordered that I stay home."
"And aren't you glad you had those five extra hours of sleep?" Jimmy pointed out, playing along.
"I would have much rather hung out with the ladies."
Agnes rolled her eyes.
"It figures" she teased, punching him in the arm. "You and Paddy were made from the same mold."
"Of course, we are brother's remember?" Joey reminded her.
"Speaking of your little friend" Johnny said winking at her "He's upstairs right now, puking all over the place. The poor baby is sick."
"We think it was the squid" Jimmy speculated, shaking his head worriedly.
Agnes's eyes popped open.
"It better not be! I ate some, too."
"Well, you're next, I guess." Maite said.
"Don't even say that. I refuse to get sick on my vacation." Agnes groaned at the thought.
"That's exactly what Paddy said." Johnny joked. "And look what happened to him!"
"I was having a good morning until I bumped into you guys" Agnes teased, signaling to the host that she was ready to be seated.
"We'll leave you in peace now" Jimmy said as he paid the waiter.
"Where are you guys off to?"
"To get licensed in scuba diving" Joey told her proudly.
"Good luck. That's something I'd never do."
The wheels in Joey's head began to turn.
"Well, I've got something you can do instead" he said, flipping her his keys. "Go pay Paddy a little visit. He was a little bummed when we left him. He'd enjoy the company… and the sparring."
Agnes was about to flip the keys back to him, appalled at the thought of paying a friendly visit to Paddy, but then the wheels in her head began to maliciously turn as well. Maybe she could have a little fun with this after all…
"Thanks" she said, smiling at Joey. "Maybe I will."
"Uh-oh" Jimmy teased. "She's got that evil look in her eyes."
"Don't be too harsh on him. He is sick, after all" Joey reminded her.
"Yeah, but it's nobody's fault but his own. He ate those disgusting creatures."
"And so did you" Maite reminded her again in a sing-song voice.
Agnes threw her hands up in the air.
"I've heard enough" she joked. "I'm going to eat breakfast now. Good luck with the scuba diving. And don't scare away all the fish."
"That's exactly what Joey will do because he's so ugly" Johnny cracked.
Joey captured him in a headlock and after saying their goodbye's to Agnes, they all clamored out of the room.
Agnes decided on a light breakfast-a grapefruit and cereal. All the while, Joey's keys sat on the table in front of her as she debated what to do. She really didn't want to give Paddy any more confidence than she had already mistakenly given him. His head would swell if she ever went to visit him. You give him an inch and he'd take ten miles, exaggerating the extra nine of course. But it was another unbearably hot day and she didn't feel like going out to the beach to bake in the sun again. So she really had no plans, and visiting Paddy could actually be fun, being that she had the upper hand. She'd be leaving in 4 days and she'd never have to see him again anyway. Swallowing her pride, she decided to give it a shot. She had nothing to lose.
She made her way back upstairs to their floor and paused outside the guys' suite. She was about to knock, but then decided to use Joey's keys instead. It would probably annoy Paddy more.
Unlocking the door, she stepped inside and found Paddy lying on the couch with a wet washcloth slung across his forehead.
He frowned when he saw her.
"What are you doing here? he demanded. I should call security. That's breaking and entering."
Agnes held up Joey's keys, jingling them proudly.
"Sorry kiddo. I don't think so." She walked over to the couch and took a seat across from him. He looked terrible. His face was flushed, dark circles surrounded his eyes, his hair looked like it hadn't been combed in days and he needed a shave.
Agnes gasped dramatically.
"Oh gee. Look at pretty boy Paddy. He's not looking too pretty this morning."
"Did you want something?" Paddy grumbled sourly. He was embarrassed to have Agnes see him in this condition and was going to kill whichever so-called brother of his had given her his keys.
"I thought you'd like some company" Agnes told him innocently.
"No you didn't. You just wanted to gloat."
"You're so cynical". She clicked her tongue in disapproval.
Paddy groaned painfully, pulling his blanket higher.
"Please leave. I'm not in the mood."
"Oh, but every time I wasn't in the mood to talk to you, you never left me alone" she reminded him.
"You weren't sick. I am."
"And that's supposed to make a difference?" Agnes laughed evilly.
"What do you want?" he groaned weakly.
"To see if you needed anything."
"Yeah. I need you to leave."
"You're so pleasant."
"Now you know how it feels to be on the receiving end for once" he shot back harshly.
Agnes smiled slyly, purposely letting his comment slide.
"So, how'd you get sick?"
"I don't know."
"It's probably mono" she cracked. "Remind me how many girls you've been with these past few days?"
"Too many to count" he lied.
"You're disgusting."
"No, I'm not. I'm sick. A little sympathy please?"
Agnes reached over to feel his forehead.
"If you have a fever, it's definitely mono."
"It's not mono!" Paddy flinched away.
Agnes reached out to him again.
"Come on. Let me feel your head. I'm going to be a doctor."
"Now that's a scary thought" Paddy said, slapping her hand away. "You touch me again, you die."
Agnes chuckled in amusement, seeing him so vulnerable and defensive.
He glared at her in contempt.
"You sure are enjoying this, aren't you? Well, I hope you're having fun."
"Ok… now that I have your permission… " Agnes pulled her camera out of her bag and snapped a quick picture of him. "I wonder how much Bravo would pay me to print this or how much you would pay me to prevent it" she said, smiling devilishly.
Paddy lunged at her but felt faint the moment he stood up. He swayed with dizziness and Agnes instinctively rushed to his side to support him. With her arm around his waist, she carefully lowered him back onto the couch.
"You're evil" he moaned, lying back down again.
"And proud of it." She winked at him and then stood up to leave.
"If I wasn't sick, you'd be on the floor begging for mercy right now" he threatened.
Agnes waved a hand dismissively.
"If you say so."
"I'm gonna get you for this"
"I'll believe it when I see it, Kelly." She waved goodbye to him, still smiling sweetly and then walked out the door, congratulating herself on a victory much deserved.

When Agnes awoke the next morning, the whole room felt as if it were spinning and she collapsed right back into bed. Putting a hand to her forehead, she groaned aloud when she felt she had a fever. She had 3 days left on the island and now she had to waste one being sick. Life just wasn't fair.
Suddenly feeling sick to her stomach, she ran to the bathroom. Falling to her knees, she vomited in the toilet, not once but three times. Groaning in anguish at her unfortunate condition, she buried her face in her hands and began to cry. How could she be sick? And then the realization hit her like a ton of bricks. Paddy and his damned squid. The dinner had made him sick yesterday and now it was taking its toll on her as well. She was going to kill him.
The phone rang, interrupting her heavy thoughts of revenge and she weakly returned to her feet and swaggered back into the suite to answer it.
"Hello?" she asked groggily.
Maite's voice greeted her on the other line.
"Morning Agnes. Hey, did I wake you?"
"No, I've been up for a while."
"You don't sound too hot. Are you okay?"
"I woke up with a fever and just puked my guts out."
"Ouch. Guess that means you're not up for jet skiing. We were hoping you'd join us."
"Wish I could."
"Well, you better get back to bed and get some rest. Hope you feel better."
"Thanks Maite. Have fun."
Agnes hung up the phone, still silently cursing Paddy for his immaturity and stupid baby games, forcing her to eat that squid. Too weak to even walk back over to the bed, she collapsed onto the couch and soon fell right back to sleep.

When Agnes awoke, she first thought she must have been dreaming, because Paddy was there in her suite, sitting sprawled out in the chair across from her.
Squinting over at him, she rubbed her eyes fiercely, forcing herself to wake up from the horrid nightmare. But when she reopened her eyes, he still sat there, grinning in amusement.
"Now this is what I call breaking and entering" he said matter-of-factly.
"How did you get in here?" Agnes groaned.
"I talked the maid into lending me her key."
"Get out."
Paddy laughed, not in the least offended by her bluntness.
"Do I have to?" he pretended to whine. "I was really enjoying watching you drool."
Agnes's hand flew to her mouth and Paddy chuckled at her naivety.
"I don't have the strength to deal with you right now, Kelly."
"I can see that" he agreed smugly. "You're not looking too hot today. And that six o'clock shadow doesn't really do you justice, either". He reached over to touch her chin but she quickly pushed his hand away.
"I'm not laughing."
"You never laugh. So how'd you get sick?"
Agnes snorted under her breath.
"Like you really don't know."
"Of course I know. I just wanted to hear you admit it."
"Admit what?"
"That you caught it from me yesterday. You thought you were slick by coming to gloat, but I was highly contagious and you caught what I had." Paddy flashed her a toothy grin of satisfaction.
"You weren't contagious. You had food poisoning. There's a difference."
"How do you know?" he challenged. "You're not in med school yet."
"Because food poisoning is caused by a…". Agnes paused mid-sentence and glared over at him. "Didn't I tell you to get out?"
Paddy crossed his arms across his chest in defiance.
"You can't get rid of me that easily."
Agnes rolled her eyes, cursing inwardly.
"Fine. Then just go ahead and get it over with."
"What?"
"Your revenge for yesterday. Take my picture and then get out."
Paddy held out his hands innocently.
"I don't have a camera. Just the fact that I was the one who got you sick is sweet enough revenge for me. You were too proud to resist the dare and now you're paying the price. Victory is sweeet."
Agnes glared at him sourly, because she knew he was right. This was nobody's fault but her own and her stupid pride.
"Don't you have any beach bimbos to go hit on?" she asked impatiently, trying desperately to get rid of him.
"Nope. I set aside the whole day to spend with you."
"I'd rather spend the day with Keanu Reeves."
"Well you got me instead. I'm the next best thing."
"Really?" Agnes asked sarcastically. "I thought you considered yourself the best thing."
"Well… now that you mentioned it" Paddy said, feigning an arrogant pose. "Naaa… I'm just kidding." He jumped up from the chair and went over to get the marble chess board from the bookshelf, bringing it back over to the table between them. "Come on, let's play."
"Isn't Candy-land more your level?"
"Ha ha. Very funny. Even in your weakened state, the insults keep on flying. I'm impressed." He set up the pieces, bragging "For your information, I'm an expert chess player. Dad taught me well."
Agnes forced herself to get up off the couch if it meant playing one game with Paddy would make him leave. Sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of the table she said:
"I'll believe that when I see it."
The first game lasted not even 5 minutes, because Paddy beat her in only 3 moves.
"Give me a break" she said, embarrassed at her loss. "I just woke up. That was my warm up round."
Paddy smiled smugly as he set up the pieces for a second game, which lasted quite a bit longer than the first one. Agnes held her own until she made a careless mistake and Paddy captured her queen.
"Checkmate" he announced proudly.
Cursing under her breath, Agnes had to surrender a second time.
"Best out of three" she announced, determined to beat him.
"You can't beat me. Just accept it and move on."
"Best out of three" she repeated again, more sternly this time.
Paddy held up his hands and laughed.
"Ok. Ok. But don't say I didn't warn you."
Agnes luckily won that game but then Paddy retaliated and won the next one, so he ended up winning the series as well.
"At least it wasn't a sweep" he joked, smiling at his victory.
Agnes stood up and grabbed his arms, trying to pull him to his feet.
"OK. You won. Now get out."
"You shouldn't be straining yourself like that" he commented, refusing to move from his position on the floor. "You're just sour cause I beat you. You're such a loser."
"I'm a sick loser who just wants to crawl into bed" Agnes groaned in anguish.
Paddy winked at her.
"Ooh. Now you're talking. Can I join you?"
Snorting in disgust, Agnes walked over to the door and opened it. She stood there frowning, hands sternly on her hips.
"You've got till the count of three."
"And then what happens?" he asked in amusement, finally rising to his feet to put the chessboard back on the bookshelf.
"Then I kick your butt."
"How about we crawl into bed together and you can kick my butt in there?"
"One…" Agnes threatened.
"Ok, guess you don't like that idea. So how bout you kick my butt now and then we crawl into bed and you can kiss it and make it all better?"
"Two…"
Paddy pretended to pout as he walked to the door.
"I came to keep you company, and this is the thanks I get-you throw me out. What am I supposed to do now all by myself?"
"Go find your main course" Agnes replied sarcastically, quoting his crude line from dinner the other night. Then she pushed him across the threshold and quickly shut the door.
"I'll be back later to check up on you" Paddy called through the door. "Don't think you can get rid of me that easily!!!!"

Agnes walked out of the hotel the next morning with an extra spring in her step. Fortunately, her bug had lasted only 24 hours and she felt as good as new. The guys had called her earlier, inviting her to go sailing with them, and she immediately took them up on their offer. She only had 3 days left on the island, and needed to make up for her wasted sick day. Besides, she had never been sailing before, so even though it meant having to put up with Paddy for yet another day, she was still looking forward to the new adventure.
When she reached the marina, she traversed the length of the dock, but saw no signs of the guys. She glanced at her watch curiously, but she was right on time. Where was everyone?
